Sap droplets herald an end to winter and the first buds burst to life
SPRING time in an English vineyard
- The start of the year.
- An early Spring can be dangerous if we get late frosts.
- Frost can damage the new shoots and lead to no crop.
- One of the most beautiful times of year in the vineyards.
- Arguably the best time for wine tasting and hotel stay
SUMMER time in the vineyard
Leaf canopies soak up the heat, sheltering tiny clusters of berries
- We hope for long sunny days with gentle winds and not too much rain.
- The vines flower during Wimbledon fortnight..
- The size of the crop is often dictated by the summer weather.
- We are constantly trimming the long shoots and removing excess leaves.
AUTUMN in the vineyard
The vines hang heavy with grapes waiting to be picked
- A good autumn will help ripen the grapes.
- Warm days and cool nights trigger the ripening process.
- Ripe fruit will make the best wine.
- The quality of the fruit is much more important than quantity.
- Harvest is expected to start in September, but there are no guarantees…
WINTER in the vineyards
Stillness returns and the vines sleep once more
- The crop has been picked and is fermenting in the winery.
- The vines are resting but we have a lot of work to do.
- Pruning is a vital part of the vineyard year.
- Everything must be ready for the spring which is just around the corner.
